With Harrison we still could hang onto bits and peaces of selfishness. With Silas, everyday I'm being stripped of my will and conformed to God's. Silas isn't a terribly difficult baby he's just different and I'm finding that I don't cope well with change. Especially with change that I didn't expect or didn't seek out. Here's a little bit about Silas.
1. The kid wont sleep. We call him our little insomniac (I'm prone to over-exaggeration). If it wasn't for my dream sleeper Harrison, I wouldn't know that a child could nap well and sleep through the night. But unfortunelty Harrison ruined me. Silas takes three 45 minute naps through out the day. We put him to sleep at 7:00, wake him up at 10 to feed him and then he'll either wake up twice or if we are really really lucky once in the night around 3 or 4. Then he's up at 7am. The other night he was up three times! So, all this to say, I'm glad that I no longer work and can just stay in my pajamas all day :)
I will add though that working would be WAY EASIER! 2 year old boys are non stop. Praise the Lord Harrison naps for 2.5 hours most days. When did I get so old and so tired? I'm 29 for heaven sake!
2. Silas refuses to take a bottle. Nathan took a whole day to just focus on getting him to take a bottle (most babies wont take one from mom until they like it enough). It took eight hours before Silas took 1 ounce. He finally got hungry enough. Supposedly once you break them down like that in one day, you should give them one every day so that they wont protest again. Well my little man doth protest! We tried to offer it again and nope. No way. He'd rather wait for mom. Nathan has tried again, and again, and again - you get what I'm saying... When he holds out he then gets his revenge at night. I'll be up two to three times.
3. Silas hates, no despises his car seat which makes getting out of the house with him very taxing. Unless we are going somewhere that I can take him out and hold him, we don't go. So errands are out of the question.
4. We think he has a milk allergy. He's always congested, had a stint where he would wake up from his naps 20 minutes into them screaming, he wheezes a lot and has eczema which are all signs of a reaction to milk proteins which means the one food that I'm obsessed with has to be nixed. No more cheese, yogurt, ranch dressing, cookies with a big glass of milk... I'm getting depressed just writing about it.
There are lots of joy filled moments too! He'll be 4 months old already, this week!
- He's very active and inquisitive. If a toy is too far away he'll figure out how to get to it.
- He started rolling to his side and tummy both ways last week.
- A swaddle can no longer contain him.
- He'd rather chat with me than eat...
- He doesn't cry or whine much.
- He loves watching everything, he wants to be in the middle of it all.
- He smiles a lot and giggles when you tickle him.
- He loves faces.
- He loves a good warm bath at night.
- He kicks and squirms a lot.
- He doesn't like to be held in your arms. He'll push at you and then let out one high pitched scream as a warning. He's always up on our shoulders or facing out, he wants to see what's going on.
- When you put him in his crib with the lights out, he falls right asleep with very little to no crying (it's staying asleep that's the issue :)
- He blows bubbles a lot.
- He bats at things and tries to hold on to his toys for a while. He loves things that make noise, mostly.
- He will no take a paci, never has but he loves sucking on his fingers. He sucks on them and talks to fall asleep.
Most of this is to keep a log that I can look back on. There are a lot of sweet memories being made and I love the time that I get with Silas. Especially when I get to hold him close and laugh, smile and chat. Nathan doesn't get as much time with him, he mostly concentrates on Harrison when we are all together but that's what teams are for, right? :)
I think the best way to describe this season that we are in right now is busy. If it's not one things with one boy, it's another with the other. From 7am to 7pm it's non stop sippy cups, play dough, blocks, spit up, rocking, running, herding, crying and laughing. By 7:30 Nathan and I both fall on the couch and exhale.
On to a diaper change and snack time! Gotta go!
